WHAT CAUSES DRY HAIR?

Dry hair can leave hair looking dull, feeling lifeless and can make your scalp an itchy, red mess. We’ve all been there - and we know dry hair is no fun. But what causes dry hair?

Simply put, the number one reason for dry hair is genetics. If your parents are also dry hair-sufferers, then it’s more likely that you will also have a dryer scalp and hair that lacks moisture.

But there are several other causes of dry hair, including excessive sun exposure, using heat on your hair and smoking. Weather plays a big part too - humidity, excessive wind and exposure to chlorine can also make your locks dry. In fact, even washing your hair too often (over-washing) can strip it of its natural oils and contribute to dry hair. Over time, these things can damage the hair and leave it brittle, heavy and lacking bounce or shine.

Dry hair is extremely common, especially in warmer climates, but luckily there are a multitude of ways you can combat dryness:

  • Indulge in a scalp massage - this can help to stimulate circulation on the scalps and in the hair follicles which promotes hydration and growth.

  • Don’t wash or brush your hair too often: dry hair especially should not be washed daily.

  • To moisturise and restore shine, be sure to use oily products to deeply replenish and hydrate the scalp and hair. This can include paying certain attention to the ends of your hair, ensuring to nourish to avoid and repair damaged ends.

  • Keep it cool and avoid using too much heat on your hair.

  • Use a nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner - like ours!
